What is dementia and how to prevent it?

 Dementia is a comprehensive term for a condition in which memory-based cognitive impairments are caused by multiple causes of brain damage and inability to maintain previous levels of daily life. Dementia refers to a combination of cognitive and higher mental functions such as intelligence, learning, and language. 

Dementia refers to a condition in which brain function is impaired due to various causes, and various cognitive functions are disabled, and memory loss is the most representative symptom.  Although there are countless causes of dementia, 90 percent of dementia patients in Korea are Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.

1. Alzheimer's

 Alzheimer's is the most common degenerative brain disease that causes dementia and progresses gradually in cognitive function, including memory.  The exact cause of Alzheimer's is not yet known, but 40 to 50 percent of all Alzheimer's patients show genetic causes. If there are people in the family who have this disease, the risk of developing it is higher than those who do not.  In general, the incidence has increased since the age of 65, but it has rarely occurred in people in their 40s and 50s.  Symptoms include memory loss, impaired judgment and cognitive function, and various mental symptoms such as personality change, nervous behavior, depression, and sleep disorders.

2. Vascular dementia

Vascular dementia is literally dementia caused by problems with the cerebral vessels, such as cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage.  If you have diseases of high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, or if you smoke or drink too much, your chances of developing the disease increase.  Vascular dementia differs in degree from symptoms depending on the area or extent of brain damage.  Symptoms may include poor attention, self-control, and stroke symptoms such as paralysis of arms and legs, pronunciation problems, vision problems, and incontinence.


3. How to Prevent Dementia

 In general, dementia has no cure at all. Therefore, the following methods are generally proposed to prevent dementia.

a. Let's keep exercising that's right for you.

I try to maintain my physical health. To do this, choose the right exercise for you and keep exercising. It's good to walk and do aerobics and swim, but the most important thing is to exercise with a pleasant mind.


b. Let's have a hobby.

Especially, I like the hobby of using detailed hand gestures, such as calligraphy, embroidery, and drawing with a joyful mind.  C. Keep a lasting relationship with your friends and do as much social activities as possible. Since you have a lot of free time when you become an old man, it is good to actively participate in social service activities that you have not been able to do before and make many friends through it.


c. Let's try to reduce stress.

Stress can cause blood vessels to contract and increase blood pressure. Erikson called old age often a time of self-integration versus despair. In this period, you can feel happy by organizing and accepting your life and finding meaning. Failure to do so will result in resentment or despair. That's why you should always have a happy heart and a positive lifestyle.


d. Take care of your weight so that you don't gain weight and maintain normal weight

In order to do that, you have to manage your meal. Eat nutrients that are necessary for your health evenly. Saline-rich foods are harmful to people with high blood pressure or heart or kidney disease. People with diabetes should avoid carbohydrates and limit their calorie intake. And people with hyperlipidemia should avoid foods with high cholesterol.
