Effective preventive measures to prevent corona virus infection

The number of confirmed cases of Corona is increasing day by day due to the group infection of the Shincheonji Church in Daegu. Anxiety is heightening when people think of the H1N1 flu that killed 240 people in Korea in 2009. It is hoped that the situation will subside as soon as possible, but it will take some time for this situation to subside as it has already spread across the country. In particular, the seriousness of the situation is greater than ever in terms of the speed and scale of the spread because the coronavirus spreads and becomes infected through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

The symptoms of a cold are runny nose and phlegm, but the symptoms of coronavirus infection are a new type of virus accompanied by dry cough and pneumonia without a runny nose. First, it infects the throat and the sore throat lasts for 3 to 4 days, and then the virus enters the lungs and causes pneumonia, which takes 5 to 6 days.

As a well-known method of preventing corona virus infection, first of all, wearing a mask and washing hands is basic. The size of the corona virus is very large (cell diameter is 400~500nm, so it can be filtered with all normal masks. However, if an infected person sneezes in front, it can spread up to 3m, so be careful.

Hand washing is the easiest and most essential preventative measure. It is important to wash your hands immediately after handling items you use in common (eg doorknobs). If the virus falls on metal, it survives for more than 12 hours, so even if you touch metal, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap. In addition to washing your hands, gargle frequently to remove or minimize the bacteria in your throat. Drinking plenty of warm water and getting plenty of sunlight indoors is also helpful. Drinking plenty of warm water is effective against all viral diseases

Phytoncide is a compound word of phyton, meaning plants, and cide, meaning sterilizing power, and collectively refers to all substances with bactericidal properties produced by forest plants. Especially, it is a natural substance that cannot be artificially synthesized or manufactured as it is a component that is emitted in large amounts from coniferous forests. The main component of phytoncide is a substance called terpene, which emits a refreshing scent with a unique refreshing feeling. It is known to be helpful in treating diseases such as bronchial tubes, asthma, and pulmonary tuberculosis as well as psychological stability, strengthening peripheral blood vessels, and strengthening cardiopulmonary function.

"The efficacy of phytoncide has been proven by 「Effect on avian influenza virus」 (1998) conducted by the Institute of Animal Medicine, Chungbuk National University, that 'phytoncide at a concentration of 8% removes more than 99% of avian influenza'" (UNN). Korea University Newspaper, 2013.04.25.)

However, you should refrain from using products that release a large amount of phytoncide for a long time in a closed room. If inhaled for a long time in a closed room, serious side effects may occur to the respiratory system.
